Darren and I were in a semi serious business mode talk when he replied to something I had said with, “but do they have kindness?” We both smiled a knowing smile and winked at each other.
About fifteen or twenty years ago, Will, our oldest was working with Darren. They had just driven past a billboard with a major department store ad announcing that they were now selling air conditioners. Of course, upon seeing this there was a little conversation. I wasn’t there and Darren doesn’t seem to remember all that was said, but in my experience with him, I can almost hear him reassuring Will that, “it will be ok, all we can do is be the very best that we can be. We can’t control what goes on around us...”
It was Will’s comment somewhere in the conversation that has stuck with us all these years, “sure they might be bigger and have fancy trucks, but do they have kindness.” Oh my goodness that sweet heart of his!
Kindness. What does that look like in the world we live in today? One of the ways the Bible describes love is kind-Love is patient, Love is kind...1 Corinthians 13:4-8. In our home, we never let the boys rag on each other too much or take things too far. We always insisted that no matter what, they were to be kind to one another. Darren and I have tried to live this out before them. We figured that our home was the petri dish, the practice field so to speak, of how we were to be out in the world. If we expected kindness, we had to be kind. So, as you can tell and hope see, kindness is a big deal around here. Now some may see this as weakness, but I have seen and experienced that kindness takes a great deal of strength, patience and self control. I have found that in the moments that I was not kind I came to regret it. There’s the old saying, “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” This is so Darren and Will. Kolby, Tucker, and I are more the, “speak truth, and speak it in love” camp. I’m not sure one is always best over the other, but I do find myself needing to apologize more...
Anyway folks, kindness matters! Our Lord and Savior has shown such kindness by coming to this earth, living a sinless life, dying a criminal’s death, raising to life on the third day victorious over death hell and the grave. Love, kindness conquered death! Through Him we we bear witness of Him! Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control. May God’s love and kindness be shown through us. May we bear the fruit of His Spirit.
Y’all have a beautiful day!😊💗💗💗
